Before 1986 (the Chernobyl catastrophe) there were 74 villages and towns on the territory of the region, including the town of Narovlia (regional center), as well as 8 rural councils. After the catastrophe 4 rural councils were abolished. About 35 villages were abandoned.
The resettlement is still in progress. Polesye radiation-ecological reserve has been created in the zone of resettlement.
