At the first period after the catastrophe in Vetka district there were registered high levels of iodine-131 and strontium-90. In total there are 82 settlements in the district which were polluted with radiation.
During 17 years after the Chernobyl disaster 58 settlements in the district have stopped their existence, 19,5 thousand people have been moved. Comparing to 1986 the number of the population has decreased from 38,4 thousand people to 20,3 thousand people according to the situation on 2003.
